Cell Systems has a family of diverse yet related flavors of the original Cell Systems Cell Culture Medium Formulation. Cell Systems offers a wide grouping of cell culture acquired from plants, animals or microorganisms which help Cell Systems create products that add nutrients such as, proteins, carbohydrates and amino acids. This overview assists the researcher in navigating the flavors and logic underlying these related products. Additional flavors of medium provide an opportunity to regulate the cell’s physiological state, phenotype or adaptation to a cellular environment during experimentation. We offer cell culture mediums containing serum along with mediums that do not.
Serum-Containing Medium Kits Cell Systems Serum-Containing Medium kits come complete with a 10mL vial of Attachment Factor™ to assist the researcher in plating cells.
These formulations:
Are based on a modified and optimized basal DMEM/F12 (1:1)
Contain serum at 10% by volume
Does not contain phenol red
Include a variety with animal derived growth factors (CultureBoost™, Cat. #4CB-500) and one with human recombinant growth factors (CultureBoost-R™, Cat. #4CB-500-R), both of which are “Complete” cell growth formulations
Include a flavor with no growth factors, rendering the medium incomplete until a growth factor has been added to support cell growth (Cat. #4CB-500 CultureBoost™ or Cat. #4CB-500-R CultureBoost-R™)
Include a variety formulated at normal human blood glucose level (glucose concentration of .9008 g/L)
Include a maintenance formulation to bring quiescence to the cell culture for experimentation. This formulation contains “conditioned” medium at 20% v/v and contains no more than hormonal levels of growth factor. The working name of conditioned medium is “warp”. The psychological effect of warp on cells is to turn down the metabolism of cells and allow maintenance of the confluent monolayer for extended periods of time (at least 4X that of CS Complete Medium)
Serum-Free Medium Kits Serum-Free Medium, the SF family, refers to a Cell Systems family of products qualified and intended for use in the absence of serum. Each kit, with the exception of Melanocyte and Keratinocyte varieties, comes complete with a 10mL vial of Attachment Factor™ to assist the researcher in plating cells.
These serum-free formulations:
Are based on a modified and optimized basal DMEM/F12 (1:1) formulation
Contain serum Albumin
Do not contain Serum and does contain phenol red
Include serum-free varieties with animal derived growth factors (RocketFuel™) and another with human recombinant growth factors only (Recombinant RocketFuel™), both of which contain Human Plasma Lipoprotein and are “Complete” cell growth formulations
There is also a serum-free variety with no growth factors which requires the addition of supplemental growth factors for proliferation of cells in culture
Include specialized varieties designed to support the particular needs of Melanocyte and Keratinocyte cells, available in both an animal derived growth factor and defined recombinant growth factor format

Must be supplemented with 10 – 20% fetal bovine serum to become Complete
Do not contain serum and do not contain phenol red
Include a variety with animal derived growth factors (CultureBoost™, Cat. #4CB-500), and another with human recombinant growth factors only (CultureBoost-R™, Cat. #4CB-500-R), both of which are “Complete cell growth formulations once serum is added
Include a variety with no serum and no growth factors, making the medium incomplete until both serum and growth factor (Cat. #4CB-500 CultureBoost™ or Cat. #4CB-500-R CultureBoost-R™) have been added
